Counselling & Psychotherapy

Most of us are attracted to having fulfilling relationships, enjoying good health, achieving our potential, coping with the peaks and troughs of life and being open to experience joy, intimacy and love.
Psychotherapy offers a safe and confidential opportunity to explore the ways we may inhibit fulfilment of our potential, either by narrowing our experience of life or by making choices that are in conflict with our life aims.
These inhibitions may appear in the form of anxiety, depression, frustration at work, or in a relationship, an inability to cope with change, eating disorders, a life crisis or illness, a sense of loss or grief, lack of self esteem, or a sense of hopelessness and isolation. People choose therapy for many reasons.

How Can Therapy Help Me?

A feeling of safety, confidentiality and trust lie at the heart of good therapy. This provides a emotionally secure place to talk freely about what is worrying you, to let go old stress through more self understanding. This brings about a better balance in ourselves and increases our strength and resourcefulness to make new choices in life. This helps foster right relationship and more balanced living.
If you are feeling invaded by painful or unhappy thoughts, or feelings of distress from the past, it is helpful to give yourself a chance to explore in greater depth the issues affecting you through therapy in a confidential and professional setting. The therapeutic relationship is an insightful and creative one which, through sensitive care, respectful listening and appropriate challenge, provides an extraordinary ground for change and growth, healing and renewal.

What Happens Next?

After a preliminary meeting with me to discuss the issues troubling you, and if you wish to proceed with therapy, we generally make a contract to meet for 8 weekly sessions lasting 50 minutes, and at the same time each week if possible. After that, we review progress and decide together whether to bring our sessions to an end, or perhaps continue for longer if that seems appropriate.
